Macchi MC-205 ”Veltro” Regia Aeronautica Italiana Summer 1943
Designed by Aeronautica Macchi ‘s Mario Castoldi, and introduced in February 1943, the Veltro “Greyhound” is regarded as possibly the best Italian aircraft of World War II. It was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine, which gave it a top speed of some 400 mph. Its armament of 20mm cannon and 12.7 mm Breda mgs made it a formidable opponent for Allied pilots. Less than 300 of these fine aircraft were built. Shown in the markings of the 51st Stormo Caccia Terrestre.
